Family Values
In honor of the 39th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the story of the New York assemblyman who, in 1970, changed his vote from “no” to “yes,” breaking a tie and effectively legalizing abortion. My idea of real and true family values: when your family members (whether that means your parents, your wife or husband and children or the other people in your life who matter)...
Gun Control
shitmystudentswrite:
American settlers also used guns and protected themselves and their family’s from Indian attacks, claim jumpers, and much more. If they had outlawed guns because Billy the Kid killed some people where would we be today? Still living on the west coast, ruled by England?
That is where I do am today, isn’t it? Is england not in charge? Who is that guy on the money?
Good Morning! May I Shrink Your Boner for "The...
So, The Artist. I saw this movie. I was excited to see this movie. I am a film history buff. I figured I’d enjoy it for the setting alone.
Full Disclosure: I do kind of hate silent movies. Much the same as I dislike going to live music unless it’s a band i’m really into. I like pictures with my sound, sound with my pictures. But I have seen enough silent film to know that the...
Dear Mr. President,
When I was 8, Ronald Reagan went to Reykjavik to summit with Gorbachev and it was the most important thing ever, because for those of you who aren’t old enough to remember the early 80’s, we were actually still really scared of the USSR back then. Ivan Drago was only like half a joke.
I was worried, because I’d voted for Mondale in the Kegonsa Elementary mock election and...
MEAT WEEK 2012 LOS ANGELES SCHEDULE IS UP. →

you know what to do. (go to town, become mayor.)
Happy New Year!
Have been back in LA a week or so. Meanwhile, I keep having these really stressful dreams in which my parents have booked holiday travel to an Asian country (last night: South Korea but to get to a second destination in Asia we had to fly back to wisconsin for a connecting flight) and I have to pack in 10 minutes while trying to fake an illness that will allow me to skip out on the whole thing.

Let there be light!
shitmystudentswrite:
The Enlightenment started when Einstein invented the light bulb. Until then people could not work long enough to figure things out because it got dark too early.
I am cautiously optimistic that this is from a high school paper, but my undergrads occasionally enjoy writing lightbulb-related fiction when film history talks about edison that isn’t that far off from...

One of my favorite Acceptable TV skits. Red Carpet Bros. Me, Romanski, and Ryznar. Written and directed by Drew Hancock. Our tribute to Entourage.
Bros. I know we’ve all seen this, but I wanna go there.
Real Adult Re-watch: New York Stories
I’ve seen this movie a few times as a kid and then probably in my early 20’s, but it’s been at least 10 years since I saw it and I can tell I’ve become more of a grownup in the interim.
I like the Nick Nolte, Rosanna Arquette Life Lessons story more. I used to like it the least, with that boring Coppola Life Without Zoey Eloise ripoff made to delight rich Manhattan tweens....
Up All Night
I am watching this show, Braunger, and you are great on it.
mattbraunger:
Hey, not sure if anybody following me on here knows this, but I’m occasionally on NBC’s “Up All Night” as Gene, one half of Gene and Terry, the annoyingly happy neighbors to Chris and Reagan (Will Arnett and Christina Applegate’s characters).
Anyway, tonight is the Christmas episode. That’s all I’ll say.
"Hello" with the white glove.
What is the problem with Michael Jackson? What…Is…The…Problem…With Michael Jackson? You understand my question? The king of pop, ooh-hoo, ee-hee.
He come to Egypt, I see picture in newspaper. “Hello” with the white glove. I’m Michael Jackson in my autoroom, with my chop up face. Your country make him chop up his face. Michael Jackson is pop king of...
Sustainability
When I lived in New York, most women I saw and knew got catcalled an average of about once a day. Most of the men I knew never catcalled anyone.
Obviously anecdotal evidence based just on people I knew means little, but let’s assume, allowing for culturally maintained age and beauty standards, however unfair, it’s more like 15 or 25% of women getting catcalled daily. That’s...
Favorite movies
This is not really an accurate or scientific list. I think I have about 15 other favorite movies including many more contemporary ones like the celebration and such, but when asked for a favorite movie, I usually name one of these four:
1. Lawrence of Arabia
2. On the Waterfront
3. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington/It’s a Wonderful Life (tied)
4. Auntie Mame
Just noticed that all of these...
Blackout
NOTE: THIS IS ONE OF THOSE BORING BLOGS. MORE FOR ME BUT I POST IT PUBLICLY BECAUSE I’M AN INTERNET NARCISSIST LIKE THE REST OF YOU.
To say this has been the worst week of my life is a big exaggeration.
Still, Thanksgiving was unexpectedly brutal. And as I was preparing to claw my way out of that hole and continue my long trek upward (to some kind of awesomeness that, I’m assured, is...

Something interesting that I just noticed today:
I AM FAAAAAT!*
How did this happen?
Kelsy: if it seems like all i talk about is how i’m fat and shy, that’s because you’re the one i told about this prior to blogging it, not because it’s all i ever talk about.**
No proglem. So I put on a few pounds this month because I paid no attention to what I was eating. I will just start paying attention starting tomorrow.

I am a real human after all!
Yesterday I used this massage certificate that Dan and I got for Christmas last year. I would have left it for him if he weren’t adamantly against receiving massages…he doesn’t like it. I understand where he’s coming from because, for reasons that are slightly different from his, I don’t like it either. It hurts and I am an incredibly uptight person and it feels like...
farm kid
I was just enthusing once again about how I only live a block from the party I went to on Friday night. (I left my coat there so I was picking it up and enthusing to the host.) I think I’ve mentioned this to about ten of you in the last few days and I just realized why and thought i would explain since it seems like a stupid thing to get all amped about:
Other than in college, I have never...
Frustrating to me..
Is that kids who come to UCLA from other countries often don’t know how to make an argument. They want to report facts, but not analyze them, or at least not analyze them in an obvious way that feeds into an overarching claim they’re proving. This is a problem every time i teach this comm class, especially, because they’re asked to create an argument based on personal...
I don't understand how to reply to people's...
Just so you know. In case I seem like a dick. If there’s a way, let me know. Otherwise I will l assume it is just more tumblr BOOOLSHEEIT.
But thanks everyone who has replied to something I’ve written in the last few months. I appreciated them all.
Sleep
I have had trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, having restful sleep, etc., since I was 8 and had to see a psychiatrist and be put on meds in 3rd grade for it for a few years. I used to be afraid of what would happen if everyone else (my parents, my brother, the world) fell asleep and I was awake and couldn’t appeal to anyone for help or company. I’m less afraid of that these days,...
Academy Academy: Citizens on Patrol
Had a student in office hours yesterday that I could have sworn was a plant sent by a friend or a hidden camera show. Kept coming and standing right next to me with her test and pointing at answers she got wrong and saying in the quietest, most timid voice, “why did i get this wrong because in section my TA said that was the answer” (her TA didn’t. it wasn’t). She was so...
My Cherished Thoughts: You're not special →
tonyzaret:
I feel like the Occupy protests are partly about the blowback from the incredible pile of self-help, “believe-in-yourself” crap that gets shoveled into Americans’ brain pits every day. We’re told constantly that we’re so special, everything we do is important and yet we still want more praise all the time. Suddenly it is dawning on an entire generation that nobody is that...
No more likes and dislikes
Have to admit, that series of blogs was boring as FUCK!
Likes and Dislikes - Day 5
I Like: Buying old books related to my field for $.90 on amazon and having them here for when I need them.
I Dislike: How few of them I actually get around to reading cover to cover
I Like: How well all of my books fit on the big ikea shelves I bought for them.
I Dislike: How soon I will run out of room for new books.
I Like: Breaking the spines of books and writing all over them.
I...
Likes and Dislikes - Day 4
I Like: Parties with drinking that start in the morning.
I Dislike: Not being at them until I write something. Something other than a blog.
I'm ok, though.
Whenever i write about my ongoing fight to climb out of my emotional hole, I feel guilty afterward about potentially worrying my friends or having my blogs seem like cries for help or attention. i do love help and attention and I guess maybe there’s some of that in there somewhere. i am not immune to the satisfactions that come with feeling sorry for onesself. but I’m mostly writing...
Likes and Dislikes - Day 3
I wasn’t able to write about this yesterday because I was busy having a nervous breakdown and disliking myself.
I Like: My friend Veronica, who came over within 5 minutes of receiving my call and talked me out of it for an hour in the middle of the day and then forced me out of the house for lunch. She did not dodge my call or tell me she was busy as she would have been completely within...
Likes and Dislikes, Day 2
I Like: Michael Fassbender. And others. Right now he’s who I like. I want to see him in more things. 1800’s British stuff preferred but will take anything. Why? Because he can act, and because he’s attractive but also sort of ugly. I like this. I like Jack White as I may have mentioned for his skinny arms, round middle and pale, weirdness. I like Sam Shepard and his fucked up...
